A faithful, immersive 3D tribute to the classic text-adventure game, Colossal Cave, as presented by best-selling game designer, Roberta Williams.


Once upon a digital dawn in 1976, Colossal Cave Adventure – or ‘Adventure‘ – sprung to life from the creative mind of Will Crowther. A fantastical voyage into the twisting virtual corridors of the Bedquilt section of Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave, the game unfolded across a vibrant, textual labyrinth brimming with treasures waiting to be discovered. Lured by cryptic, two-word commands, players explored and interacted with their digital surroundings – their every action narrated with a dash of snarky eloquence.

1977 saw Don Woods sprinkling his own magic over the text-based realm, adding a dash of whimsy with more creatures, spells, and scores. Amid the hum of teleprinters, the game travelled through ARPANET’s veins – the Internet’s embryo, hinting at the game’s profound influence on the electronic world.

Colossal Cave Adventure, one of the inaugural teletype games, garnered colossal acclaim, inspiring iconic titles like ZorkMystery House, and Rogue. Its legacy echoes in the annals of interactive fiction, adventure, and RPG genres. In 2019, it earned a rightful place in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. A testament to its enduring charm.

Roberta and Ken Williams who founded and ran Sierra On-Line for nearly 20 years have come back from a long retirement to pay homage to the game that that started it all: Colossal Cave.

Developed using Unity, over a two-year period, Colossal Cave is a first-person, single-player, 3D adventure that will delight the millions of Sierra and classic Colossal Cave fans worldwide.

According to Cygnus Ringleader, Ken Williams, “While locked down by the Pandemic I wrote a book about the old Sierra days. Its success surprised me and brought back many memories of our days making games. This led me to investigate how modern games are made and I just started coding using the Unity game engine for fun. I was looking for something interesting to code when Roberta suggested Colossal Cave. Roberta started to work adapting it to 3D, and I assembled a team. As we dug deeper and deeper into the game we discovered layers of complexity that explain why the game became such an industry phenomenon. It has action elements, humor, a scoring system, adventure elements, interesting characters, a huge world to explore, and more. This is truly a game that will delight a new generation, and 100% different than anything I’ve seen in the market today.”
