For Immediate Release
February 22, 2022
Seattle, WA:

Cygnus Entertainment, the new 3D and Virtual Reality game development company from Sierra On-Line founders Ken and Roberta Williams, announced they would release Colossal Cave 3D this fall, the couples’ first game in over 2 decades.

The legendary creators of iconic games such as King’s Quest and Phantasmagoria have been secretly developing the first-person adventure game for over two years using the Unity Real-Time Development Platform.

Colossal Cave 3D is based on the wildly popular adventure game first developed by William Crowther in 1975 and later updated by Don Woods in 1977. The game was a text based adventure where players hunt for treasure and must outwit dwarves and dragons by typing commands such as “XYZZY” to transport themselves away from danger.

“We have completely recreated Colossal Cave for the millions of fans that grew up with it and a new generation of gamers,” said Ken Williams. “It takes place in a fully immersive 3D and VR environment for a realistic cave exploration experience that is intended for the whole family,” he said. “

Gamers will need to overcome encounters with dwarves, trolls, a giant snake, a bear and even a fire breathing dragon as they traverse some 143 locations in the underground cave. Their exploration will be rewarded with valuable treasure. The original Colossal Cave was based on Crowther’s time exploring Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky, the largest cave system known in the world.

The Williams will be demonstrating the game for the first time for the public at the 2022 Game Developers Conference (GDP) in San Francisco March 21st through the 25th at the Unity booth.
